History of Notary Public 

The history of the notary public dates back to ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. In ancient Egypt, scribes held an important role in society, documenting transactions, laws, and official decrees. Similarly, in ancient Greece, scribes recorded public and private documents, playing a critical role in maintaining the legal and economic framework of the city-states.

Ancient Origins

In ancient Rome, the role of the notary began to take on a more defined shape. The Roman notaries was a scribe who took notes and transcribed speeches and proceedings. Over time, the notaries became involved in the preparation of official documents, such as wills and contracts. The Roman legal system recognized the importance of having trusted individuals to witness and authenticate legal transactions, laying the groundwork for the modern notarial system.

Apostille Convention 

The Hague Convention of 5 October 1961 Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents, commonly known as the Hague Apostille Convention.  The Convention is to faciliate the use of public documents within the 125 member countries, which simplifies the process of legalizing public documents to be used in foreign countries.

Electron Apostille Programme (e-APP) was launched in 2006.

​

"Apostille" is a certificate affixing to a document to verify the authenticity of the signature and seal of the notary public.
